Lexis: EVP

Text Inspector has joined with Cambridge University Press to produce a tool for analysing your texts in terms of the English Vocabulary Profile (EVP), part of the English Profile project.
EVP_graph_detail
The English Vocabulary Profile is based on extensive research using the Cambridge Learner Corpus (CLC). This is a collection of several hundred thousand examination scripts written by learners from all over the world that is added to every year.
Free EVP tool
On the EVP website here you can find a FREE tool to check your text (up to 500 words) to see the levels of the words in the text, according to the EVP levels.
Note: The tool currently only has the UK version of the EVP. In future it is hoped also to have the US version.

Advanced EVP tool

On the main Textinspector.com website you can use the Advanced EVP tool to analyse your texts. To do this you will have to get a subscription which includes EVP.
The Advanced EVP tool allows you to:
input larger texts
-export your data to Excel
-analyse your data in terms of percentages, not only raw numbers
-keep your texts secure
Note: The tool currently only has the UK version of the EVP. In future it is hoped also to have the US version.
What can the tool do?
With the EVP tool you can analyse your text in terms of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) levels A1-C2. (See an explanation here.). This analysis is shown in the form of a graph like this:

EVP_graphs

You can also see details of the words analysed in each level, like this:
 EVP_buckets
The tool gives the LOWEST analysis by default. For example, the word ‘hunt’ in the EVP could be either:
B1 verb (CHASE to chase and kill animals)
B2 verb (SEARCH lo search for something or someone)
C2 noun (a search for something or someone)
The tool by default chooses B1 which in this text is correctBut if you want to change an analysis you can click on the word in the text and select an alternative, like this:
EVP_amend_2
Then click UPDATE to change the category and all the statistics.
If you want to export the data, you can click on EXPORT on the left:

Export_button

Or you can export the detailed information by clicking on the Export statistics and details button:
