Key to CEFR Levels
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the world’s most widely used international standard for language proficiency.
It uses a six-point scale from A1 (Beginner) to C2 (Proficient) to help learners understand their abilities, enable teachers to find appropriate materials, and allow educational institutions to compare language skills across the globe.
At Text Inspector, we’ve introduced a D grade, split into D1 and D2, to describe academic proficiency that exceeds the CEFR’s C2 level. D1 indicates a university undergraduate standard, while D2 denotes a level above this. Although this is our own terminology and not part of the original CEFR framework, it addresses a widely supported idea within Applied Linguistics: that a level beyond C2 is necessary to accurately describe truly high-level language use.
The Text Inspector Scorecard provides a clear, data-driven analysis of your text’s CEFR level, giving you an ‘at a glance’ overview and estimated score. This analysis uses a wide range of statistically significant metrics to ensure the highest possible accuracy.
